Hey everyone, welcome back to Foodie's Corner! Today, we are taking a deep dive into an authentic Italian spot nestled along Rotterdam's waterfront to see if its seasonal dishes, traditional craft, and maritime setting live up to expectations.

Location

Situated along Schiehavenkade in Rotterdam, Trattoria Sofia is located in a quiet, modern waterfront district. The neighborhood, unlike the chaotic rush of the city center, gives a spacious harbor feel. Although the outdoor terrace and the restaurant itself sit adjacent to a road surrounded by buildings with steady vehicular passing, and light pedestrian foot traffic. Accessibility is effortless, making it an easy escape whether you are arriving on foot or by local transit.

Ambience

I arrived at 11:20 AM on a warm Friday late morning, shortly after the restaurant opened its doors at 11:00 AM. Outside, the summer heat reached a sweltering 32 degrees Celsius, making the indoor dining room a welcome refuge. Stepping inside, I took a table in the closed main dining area lightened by the outside light with glass panels lining the entire outer wall. The interior temperature was still warm but manageable, filled with a subtle, pleasant aroma of fresh cut wood.

The design incorporates simple decoration with a roomy layout that gives tables plenty of personal space. From behind me in the inner roomwas a view of the pizzaiolos preparing the station, which added a lively culinary backdrop to the room. The acoustic environment was notably peaceful during this off-peak hour, with minimal patron presence. Background audio went between classical arrangements and Italian songs kept at a low, conversational volume.

Atmosphere score: 12/15 pts. An inviting, spacious room enhanced by gentle classical acoustics, subtle woody scents, and an engaging view of the kitchen setup.

Menu

The menu at Trattoria Sofia is thoughtfully curated and focused, eschewing sprawling, over-extended offerings in favor of a cohesive culinary identity. Core recurring Italian classics anchor the selection, supplemented by a seasonal rotation that specifically highlights fresh pasta preparations and specialty pizzas.

Pricing lands slightly higher than average market benchmarks, but this premium feels justified given the spacious ambiance, harbor-adjacent setting, and reliance on authentic imported Italian products. Dish descriptions are clear and straightforward, letting traditional flavor pairings speak for themselves without unnecessary clutter.

Food

Before diving into the courses, I cleansed my palate with a chilled Gazzosa. Served in a single glass bottle with ice cubes and fresh lemon slices, it poured exactly two full glasses. The beverage opens with a sweet, sparkling citrus profile before resolving into a clean, palate-cleansing acidity that proved invaluable throughout the meal.

Starter: Beef tartare

Delivered to the table at 11:38 AM, thirteen minutes after ordering, which is quite fast and an acceptable timeframe. The beef tartare made an immediate impression with its vibrant plating. The dish showcased simple primary tones of rich red beef, fresh green caper(?) base, and bright orange-leaning accents.

Tasted in isolation, the finely hand-cut beef offered a light chewiness while remaining remarkably smooth to consume. It was liberally coated in high-quality olive oil and dotted with sea salt crystals that added a sharp initial crunch and salty flavour. The flavour base was quickly dominated by a pronounced caper preparation and fresh parsley. A crisp bread flake, similar in texture to a nacho chip yet somehow more delicate, introduced a subtle toasted, aged bread note (perhaps a bit too aged somehow if tasted as-is on its own). When combined in a single bite, the bread flake acted as an effective palate resetter while the sharp capers balanced the rich, oily beef.

TL;DR: A visually striking starter featuring chewy beef and bold caper seasoning, elevated by crisp bread flakes and olive oil.

Main: Rigatoni al ragù

Arriving at 11:58 AM, eight minutes after the starter was finished, the Rigatoni al ragù was delivered warm at an ideal serving temperature, releasing a deep aroma of slow-cooked beef ragout. Plated with rustic, warm woody tones, the presentation appeared slightly disorganized at first glance, but the dish was uniformly integrated and required no manual mixing.

The rigatoni pasta was cooked firm, leaning borderline undercooked/al dente, yet its hearty structure absorbed the rich sauce effectively. The ragout sauce itself had a fluid, highly flavorful consistency built on a base of cooked carrots and onions. The beef was the star component: exceptionally tender, juicy, and achieving a complete melt-in-your-mouth texture. The kitchen kept the baseline saltiness restrained, providing a small side cup of grated parmesan so diners can adjust seasoning to taste. Lacking an integrated raw acidic element on the plate, the crisp Gazzosa served as the primary palate reset between heavy bites.

TL;DR: Deeply comforting rigatoni paired with ultra-tender, slow-cooked beef ragù that delivers classic rustic flavor.

Dessert: Tiramisu

Served at 12:15 PM in a thoroughly chilled glass vessel, the tiramisu brought the savory courses to a refined close. Its visual presentation carried a distinct house-made charm.

The dessert delivered a cool, rich, and velvety mouthfeel driven by a generous ratio of smooth cream. The underlying biscuit layer was thoroughly saturated with robust coffee flavor, achieving ideal moisture without leaving any pooled liquid at the bottom of the glass. The balance between cocoa bitterness, dark espresso, and sweet mascarpone provided a satisfying conclusion to the meal.

Service

Operating with a single waitress on duty during this quiet Friday noon service, the operational flow was smooth and attentive: water and Gazzosa arrived within one minute of ordering, the starter hit the table barely 10 minutes after the kitchen opened, the main course followed smoothly 20 minutes later, and dessert was served a few minutes after I finished my main. Hospitality was polite, quiet, and unobtrusive, perfectly matching the calm atmosphere of an early lunch visit.
